Synopsis

The artist Grace Schwindt works across a range of media including sculpture, painting, film and performance. Regardless of the medium she chooses, the body consistently occupies the centre of her work as an archive, a repository of memories. Kunsthaus Wiesbaden now shows the artist’s first comprehensive solo exhibition. One element of this will be the choreographic work Love Letter to Those Who Did Not Survive. Here Schwindt addresses the trauma of war and people who have not survived wars. It is based on diary entries by women from different eras and geographical contexts. Working with a dancer, Schwindt has used techniques of dance psychotherapy to transpose the actions and gestures described into her own movement language. Documented in a video archive, this forms the choreographic basis for her work with two dancers of the Hessian State Ballet who have developed a performance from the material. This opens a space in which historical testimony is not narrated but made tangible through physical presence. As a result, past and present enter a direct dialogue.
